Basic Public Information Officer (PIO) G290

DESCRIPTION: Emergency public information officers are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the general public is kept informed of any emergency situation in which it might be involved. Public information activities are essential to all emergency management functions. The course assists participants with building the skills needed to be a full- or part-time public information officer: such as oral and written communications, understanding and working with the media, and the basic tools and techniques PIOs need. Topics include the role of the PIO in emergency management, conducting awareness campaigns, news release writing, public speaking, and television interviews.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Emergency management personnel, including fire, law enforcement, public health, voluntary organizations active in disasters, and others who have either full- or part-time responsibilities for public information in their communities or departments. Participants from CSEPP communities would benefit from this training also. Successful completion of this course meets the pre-requisite for the Advanced Public Information Officers (E388) course at EMI.
